Lil Nas X Twitter

On March 25, Lil Nas X released the much anticipated video for his song, MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), and it went instantly viral. The video features and unabashedly queer Nas, ending with the rapper giving a lap dance to the leather-clad devil, before he snaps Lucifer’s neck and claims his crown.

Following its release, the video has been met with love and support from the LGBTQ+ community, trending on Twitter and becoming the No. 1 trending video on YouTube.

There were of course the haters, who Nas had no patience for, clapping back at them with the savagery that he’s come to be known for.

Candace Owens sparked a Twitter argument with Cardi B and Lil Nas X on Sunday, accusing the artists of getting in the way of Black people's progress in the US. The dispute came days after Lil Nas X announced he was collaborating with MSCHF on 'Satan Shoes,' sneakers that contain drops of human blood, following the release of his new single 'Montero (Call Me by Your Name).' One glance through Lil Nas X's social media — Twitter, TikTok, you name it — makes it evident that he grew up on the internet and knows how to use it. The singer admitted in 2020 that he was a 'Barb' — a Nicki Minaj stan — and confirming long-held rumors that he used to run a stan account focused on the rapper.

Alongside a video of Lil Nas X performing at an elementary school, one user wrote: “The system is targeting kids. Lil Nas X’s fanbase is mostly children. They did the same thing with Miley Cyrus after Hannah Montana.”

Lil Nas X then responded to the tweet, writing: “There was no system involved. I made the decision to create the music video. I am an adult. I am not gonna spend my entire career trying to cater to your children. That is your job.”

He kept the comebacks coming in response to another since-deleted tweet, which claimed that Lil Nas X’s display of his sexuality is “destroying society.”

“There is a mass shooting every week that our government does nothing to stop,” Lil Nas X wrote. “Me sliding down a CGI pole isn’t what’s destroying society.”

There was much loving feedback from fans as well as those who used the opportunity to troll homophobes, and below are some of the best on Twitter:

Nas also shared a screenshot of what appears to be his father expressing his pride in him.

Drawing upon a letter he wrote to his younger self on Instagram, Lil Nas X tweeted at the critics to “stay mad.” “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the shit y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay,” Lil Nas X wrote. “So I hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”
